Having proper oral health is not only vital for healthy teeth and gums, but for your overall health. Oral health comes down to more than just brushing and flossing daily; you also need to be careful what you eat and drink.  The following vitamins and nutrients will give you better oral health and help prevent gingivitis and periodontal disease.

Vitamin A

The first selection of healthy foods you should eat contain a high amount of vitamin A. Vitamin A helps your skin cells to grow, while a deficiency of this vitamin may lead to delayed healing of your gums. It is important to have healthy gum cell growth and help to fight off bacteria that can cause periodontal disease. Foods with a good amount of vitamin A that are also good for you include kale, collard greens, spinach, carrots, and cantaloupe.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is not one type of vitamin but a selection of different vitamins. They are also essential for proper health of your teeth and gums. If you don't get enough vitamin B, you might notice that you have peeling skin on the inside of your cheeks, a swollen tongue, or tingling gums. These are all signs of vitamin B deficiency. A lot of delicious and healthy foods contain B vitamins, including almonds, bananas, and poultry. The important B vitamins include B2, B16, B12, folic acid, and niacin.

Vitamin C and D

Don't forget about the importance of vitamins C and D as well. Vitamin C can help reduce cell damage in your gums and strengthen your teeth. You will also notice that you heal faster after having oral surgery if you have enough vitamin C. Fruit is often the best source of this vitamin, found in oranges, mangoes, kiwi, papaya, and strawberries. Vitamin D is found in oily fish, milk and eggs, and helps to give you stronger jaw bone and teeth.

Calcium, Potassium and Zinc

Additional nutrients to be sure you have in your diet include calcium, potassium, and zinc. Calcium helps prevent teeth and bone loss and can also help to rebuild the enamel on your teeth. This is found in salmon, green leafy vegetables, yogurt, milk, and cheese. Potassium is found in most fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. It helps with general oral health, improving the healing process and reducing inflammation in the gums. Zinc is going to help you fight off canker sores and give you healthier gums, which is found in eggs, liver, pumpkin seeds, and lentils.
